Waco Golf Courses: A Student's Guide to Golfing Near Baylor

Lush green fairway on a golf course with trees lining the edges under a clear blue sky

Golfing in Waco sounds like something you need a country club membership for — until you find out that Cottonwood Creek Golf Course charges $24 for a full weekday round at one of the top-ranked municipal courses in Texas. Whether you've played for years or you're just looking for a reason to get outside, Waco golf courses offer far more variety and value than most students realize.

Here's where to go, what to budget, and how to get the most out of each course depending on your skill level and schedule.

The Best Waco Golf Courses Near Baylor

Four main options cover the full range of what Baylor students need — from a beginner-friendly tech range to a challenging 18-hole layout that hosts the Baylor varsity golf teams. Here's how they break down.

Cottonwood Creek Golf Course — The Student Favorite

For playing real golf at a reasonable price, Cottonwood Creek Golf Course (5200 Bagby Ave) is the go-to. The city-owned, par-72 course stretches over 7,140 yards and consistently ranks among the best municipal courses in Texas.

Green fees:

  • Weekdays: $24 walking, cart rental $17
  • Weekends: $32 walking, cart rental $17
  • Twilight rates: Available for late-afternoon rounds — rates drop after 4 PM
  • 9-hole practice course: $5

The course comes with a full driving range, a pro shop, and an on-site bar-and-grill. Baylor's Club Golf team uses Cottonwood Creek for fall and spring tryouts, which speaks to the quality of the layout. If you're new to golf and want to play on real grass without a full commitment, the $5 nine-hole loop is one of the cheapest ways to get started anywhere in central Texas.

Distance from Centre Apartments: About 15 minutes by car down Bagby Avenue.

Bear Ridge Golf Club — Where the Baylor Varsity Teams Practice

For a step up in challenge, Bear Ridge Golf Club in nearby Woodway is a semi-private course with public tee times and a serious pedigree. It's the official home course for Baylor University's men's and women's varsity golf teams, and was designed by PGA Tour veteran Peter Jacobsen and instructor Jim Hardy.

At 7,478 yards from the back tees, it's not a beginner's layout — but multiple tee box options make it workable for all skill levels. The course winds through the South and Middle Bosque River valley, and the scenery is genuinely excellent.

Green fees:

  • Weekdays: $24 green fee plus $18 cart
  • Weekends: $34 green fee plus $18 cart
  • Online booking: bearridge.cps.golf

The Grille restaurant on site makes it easy to turn a round into a longer afternoon. The pricing is comparable to Cottonwood Creek on weekdays, so the real difference is course difficulty and setting — Bear Ridge is worth the extra 20-minute drive when you want a more challenging layout.

Lake Waco Golf Club — Best Value for Afternoon Rounds

Lake Waco Golf Club sits on the north shore of Lake Waco and offers two 18-hole courses: a full regulation layout and an executive par-3 course. It's about 25 minutes from campus, but the twilight pricing makes that drive worthwhile.

Green fees:

  • Standard rate: $31–$36 depending on the day
  • Twilight (after 2:30 PM): $26 with cart
  • Late twilight (after 3:30 PM): $14 with cart — the best deal on golf in waco tx
  • Walk-only twilight: $6

That after-3:30 rate is one of the best golf values in the region. Even including the drive, a late-afternoon round at Lake Waco runs less than dinner at most restaurants in Waco. The par-3 executive course is also a good option if you want 18 holes without a 4+ hour commitment.

The facility has a full pro shop, restaurant, fishing ponds, and scenic walking trails — so there's plenty to do if you want to make a half-day of it. For more on what's out at the lake, check out the Lake Waco recreation guide.

TopGolf Waco — The No-Pressure Starting Point

TopGolf Waco (2301 Creekview Dr) isn't a traditional course, but it's the right starting point for anyone who's never picked up a club or wants a social golf experience without scorecards.

Bay pricing:

  • Starting from $20/hour per bay (up to 6 players share the bay)
  • $6 one-time account activation for new players
  • Summer Fun Pass available seasonally for repeat visitors

Hours: Mon–Thu 9 AM–12 AM, Fri–Sat 9 AM–1 AM, Sun 9 AM–12 AM

Each bay tracks your shots using microchipped balls and scoring targets, so the experience is genuinely fun whether you're swinging well or not. Food and drinks are available the entire time, and the late-night hours make it one of the better group activity options in Waco when you want something different from bars or escape rooms. Six people splitting a bay pay about $3–4 each per hour — hard to beat for a few hours of entertainment.

How to Save Money on Golf in Waco

Go on weekday mornings. Cottonwood Creek and Bear Ridge are cheapest Monday through Thursday, and tee times are much more available before noon. If you have a gap between classes or a free morning, you can often walk on without a reservation at Cottonwood Creek.

Use Lake Waco's twilight window. The after-3:30 PM slot — $14 for 18 holes with a cart — is worth building your afternoon around. That's genuine value for a full round at a maintained course with lake views.

Start at TopGolf or the 9-hole before committing to a full round. Paying $24 for a full 18-hole round before you've figured out your swing is a frustrating way to spend an afternoon. The $5 9-hole at Cottonwood Creek and the $20/hour TopGolf bay are both better learning environments when you're starting out.

Check the Baylor Waco Perks program. All current Baylor students are automatically enrolled — check the participating vendor list for any golf-related discounts before booking. Club rentals are typically available at public courses for $15–$25 if you don't own your own set.

Bonus: Free disc golf on campus. Baylor has a disc golf course on campus that's free to play — a good zero-cost option if you just want to be outside and get some steps in without driving anywhere. UDisc has the layout listed.

Golf as a Social Skill at Baylor

One practical note worth including: golf is one of the few activities in Waco that doubles as professional development. Networking events, client rounds, and intern outings in corporate settings often happen on the course — especially for business school students at Hankamer. If you're thinking about careers in finance, consulting, or real estate, learning the basics while you're in school costs almost nothing at Waco's public courses.

Baylor also has an active Club Golf team separate from the varsity program, using Cottonwood Creek for tryouts each semester. The team competes in the National Collegiate Club Golf Association (NCCGA) and it's a low-key way to play more regularly and meet other golfers on campus.
