15 Free and Cheap Things to Do in Waco as a Baylor Student

Group of young friends laughing together outdoors on a sunny day, representing the fun free activities available in Waco for Baylor students

You just moved to Waco for school, and your bank account is already feeling it. Between rent, textbooks, and the occasional late-night Whataburger run, finding things to do in Waco as a Baylor student without draining your wallet can feel like a challenge. But here's the thing — Waco is packed with free and cheap activities that most students don't discover until junior year. Don't be that person. Here are 15 of the best ways to spend your free time without spending your rent money.

Outdoor Adventures

1. Hike (or Bike) Cameron Park

Cameron Park is a 416-acre park with over 26 miles of trails along the Brazos and Bosque Rivers. It's the second-largest municipal park in the country, and it's completely free. Hike the bluffs, mountain bike the single-track trails, or just sit at Lovers Leap overlook and stare at the river 100 feet below. There's also a free 23-hole disc golf course if that's your thing. Open daily from 6 a.m. to midnight.

2. Kayak or Paddleboard the Brazos River

The Brazos River runs right through downtown, and renting a kayak or paddleboard is one of the best cheap afternoons in Waco. Waco Paddle Company and Pura Vida Paddle both offer rentals starting around $25-$30 for a couple of hours. Paddle under the historic suspension bridge, drift past Cameron Park's cliffs, and pretend you're on vacation. The Bosque Bluffs paddling trail is a 2.2-mile loop — perfect for beginners.

3. Walk the Waco Riverwalk

The Riverwalk along the Brazos is free, paved, and great for a run, a walk, or just getting outside between classes. It connects to parks, bridges, and some of the best views in the city. Bring headphones, cue up a podcast, and you've got a solid study break that costs exactly zero dollars.

On Campus (Free with Your Baylor ID)

4. Mayborn Museum Complex

This one's a sleeper hit. The Mayborn Museum is a 142,000-square-foot museum right on Baylor's campus with 17 themed discovery rooms and a 13-acre historic village out back. It covers natural science, cultural history, and Central Texas ecology. The best part? Admission is free for all Baylor students. Just show your ID at the ticketing desk. It's also free for TSTC and MCC students.

5. Armstrong Browning Library

Even if you're not a literature major, the Armstrong Browning Library is worth a visit. It holds the world's largest collection of Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning's works, but honestly, most people go for the building itself — stained glass windows, ornate ceilings, and an atmosphere that makes you feel like you're in a European cathedral. Free admission, open Monday through Saturday.

6. Baylor Bear Habitat

Yes, Baylor has actual live bears on campus. The Bear Habitat near the Bill Daniel Student Center houses Baylor's bear mascots, and watching them roam around is a solid 20-minute distraction between classes. Free, no ticket needed.

7. Martin Museum of Art

Located in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center, the Martin Museum hosts rotating exhibits from student artists, faculty, and visiting collections. It's small but worth popping into, especially during exhibition openings that often include free refreshments. Free admission for everyone.

Downtown & Around Town

8. Magnolia Silos

Love them or roll your eyes at the crowds — the Magnolia Silos are free to wander. The grounds include gardens, a wiffle ball field, food trucks, and plenty of seating. You don't have to buy anything to enjoy the space (though the cupcakes from Silos Baking Co. are hard to resist at around $3.50 each). Great for showing visiting parents around. Speaking of exploring the area, check out our neighborhood guide for more spots near Centre.

9. Waco Downtown Farmers Market

Every Saturday morning, the Downtown Farmers Market sets up with local produce, baked goods, handmade crafts, and food vendors. Browsing is free, and if you do buy something, you're supporting local Waco businesses. It's a low-key way to spend a Saturday morning before heading to the library — or back to bed.

10. First Friday Art Walk

On the first Friday of every month, downtown Waco comes alive with free art shows, live music, and open-door events at local businesses and galleries. It's one of the best free nights out in the city and a great way to discover shops and restaurants you didn't know existed.

11. Fabled Bookshop & Cafe

Fabled made Forbes' list of top bookshops, and it's easy to see why. Browse two floors of books, grab a coffee, and settle into one of the reading nooks. You can spend an entire afternoon here without buying a thing (though a coffee runs $4-$6). Open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday noon to 7 p.m. It's at 215 S 4th Street, right downtown.

Worth the Small Splurge

12. Dr Pepper Museum

Waco is literally where Dr Pepper was invented, so this one's a must-do at least once. The museum is housed in the original 1906 bottling plant and covers the history of the world's oldest major soft drink brand. Admission is $10, and it includes a free Dr Pepper from the old-fashioned soda fountain. Located at 300 S 5th Street.

13. Waco Mammoth National Monument

This is an actual National Park Service site right here in Waco — most students have no idea it exists. The grounds are free to explore, and a guided tour of the dig shelter where they found Columbian mammoth fossils is only $6. Open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's one of the most interesting things you'll do in college for less than the price of a latte.

14. Cameron Park Zoo

Right next to Cameron Park, this award-winning zoo features natural habitats with animals from around the world. Student admission typically runs $10-$14 depending on the season. It's compact enough to do in a couple of hours, and the Brazos River exhibit is genuinely impressive. Open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

15. Waco Surf

When it's 100 degrees in September (and it will be), Waco Surf is where you want to be. It features a world-class wave pool, waterslides, and what they claim is the world's longest lazy river. Day passes start around $30-$50 depending on the package. It's a bit of a splurge, but worth it for a birthday or end-of-semester celebration.

Make the Most of Your Baylor ID

Your student ID is basically a discount card around Waco. Flash it at the Mayborn Museum, Cameron Park Zoo (check for student pricing days), local restaurants, and movie theaters. Many spots offer Baylor-specific deals — the Baylor Student Activities page lists current perks.

Between free campus museums, hundreds of acres of parks, and a downtown that actually has things going on, Waco punches way above its weight for a college town. Pair that with a low cost of living and affordable rent, and your money goes a lot further here than in Austin or Dallas.

Living Close Makes It Easy

Most of these spots are within a short drive — or a walk — from the Baylor campus area. When you're living at a place like Centre on South 11th Street, you're already close to campus, downtown, Cameron Park, and the Riverwalk. No long commutes eating into your free time.

Check out our floor plans to see what's available, or schedule a tour to see the place in person. When your apartment is close to everything, you'll actually get out and enjoy Waco instead of just sitting in your room.
