The Best Coffee Shops and Study Spots Near Baylor Campus
Whether you need a caffeine-fueled cram session before finals or just a solid Wi-Fi connection and a change of scenery, knowing the best study spots near Baylor University can make or break your semester. Waco's coffee scene has exploded in the last few years, and there are now more options than Common Grounds (though it's still great). Here's a rundown of the best coffee shops and on-campus spots where Baylor students actually get work done.
The Best Coffee Shops for Studying Near Baylor
Common Grounds
1123 S 8th Street | Mon–Fri 7am–11pm, Sat–Sun 8am–11pm
If you've been at Baylor for more than a week, someone has already told you about Common Grounds. It's right next to campus, it's open late, and the backyard — a tree-covered patio that doubles as a live music venue on weekends — is one of the best hangout spots in Waco. Full espresso bar, cold brew, nitro, kombucha, loose leaf tea, and seasonal specials. The vibe leans social, so if you need dead silence, this isn't it. But for group study sessions or casual work with background chatter, it's hard to beat. Check out our neighborhood page for more on the area around campus.
Fabled Bookshop & Cafe
215 S 4th Street | Mon–Sat 9am–9pm, Sun 12–7pm
Fabled made Forbes' list of top bookshops for a reason. Two floors of books, a cafe serving coffee, food, beer, and wine, and reading nooks scattered throughout. It's the kind of place where you can disappear for four hours and not notice. Coffee runs $4–$6, and the food menu is solid if you need lunch without leaving your study zone. Great for solo deep-focus work.
Dichotomy Coffee & Spirits
508 Austin Avenue | Mon–Thu 6am–11pm, Fri–Sat 6am–12am, Sun 6am–11pm
Dichotomy is a coffee shop by day and a cocktail bar by night — and the transition is seamless. The real draw is the rooftop deck, which might be the best outdoor seating downtown. It opens at 6 a.m. for early birds, stays open late, and the Wi-Fi is reliable. If you're the type who starts with espresso and ends with a glass of wine, this is your place.
Cha Community
1001 Franklin Avenue | Mon–Fri 9:30am–8pm, Sat–Sun 11am–8pm
Formerly known as Waco Cha, this Asian American-owned boba tea cafe earned co-owner Devin Li a spot on the Forbes Next 1000 list. The menu goes beyond boba — think dumplings, Chinese BBQ pork, noodles, and a range of tea and coffee drinks. The Wi-Fi is fast, the tables are plentiful, and the service is genuinely friendly. It's become a favorite study spot for students who want something different from the standard latte-and-laptop setup.
Milo All Day
1020 Franklin Avenue | Wed–Mon 10am–9pm (closed Tuesdays)
Milo is more of a restaurant than a coffee shop, but the patio is one of the best in Waco and they serve excellent local coffee alongside farm-to-table food and craft cocktails. It's ideal for a study brunch or a working lunch — grab a biscuit, order a coffee, and settle in. Not the cheapest option, but the quality and atmosphere make up for it.
Bitty & Beau's Coffee
110 Franklin Avenue | Mon–Sat 8am–6pm, Sun 9am–6pm
Every front-line employee at Bitty & Beau's is a person with an intellectual or developmental disability. The coffee is great, the mission is better, and the atmosphere is genuinely uplifting. It's a smaller space, so it works best for a quick study session or a coffee break between longer stints at the library. Downtown location, easy to pair with a trip to Fabled or Dichotomy.
Pinewood Roasters
Austin Avenue | Hours vary
Started by Baylor grads in a garage in 2015, Pinewood landed on a national "best coffee shops in America" list in 2019. They roast their own beans and take the craft seriously. If you care about coffee quality as much as study vibes, this is a must-try. The space is minimal and focused — no frills, just really good coffee.
On-Campus Study Spots
Sometimes you don't want to spend money on a latte just to get work done. Baylor's campus has solid study options that are free and walkable.
Moody Memorial Library
The main campus library has three floors with different energy levels. The Garden Level is great for group work — flexible seating, collaborative tables, and it's okay to talk. The second floor is a balanced mix for focused individual work. The third floor is mandatory silent study — no talking, no phone calls, just heads-down focus. They also have noise-canceling pods if you really need to lock in.
Jesse H. Jones Library
Connected to Moody but much quieter, Jones Library is where you go when Moody feels too crowded. The intimate setting works for long reading sessions, research papers, and anything that requires uninterrupted concentration.
Armstrong Browning Library
We mentioned this in our things to do in Waco post, and it doubles as a stunning study spot. Stained glass windows, ornate ceilings, and a mandatory quiet zone. It's more "European cathedral" than "college library," which either inspires you or distracts you — but most students swear by it for focused writing.
Bill Daniel Student Center (the SUB)
The second and third floors of the SUB have lounges and quieter seating areas that most students overlook. Proximity to food is the selling point — you can grab lunch downstairs and be back at your table in five minutes. Not the quietest option, but convenient for between-class study blocks.
Outdoor Spots
When the weather cooperates (which in Waco is roughly eight months of the year), Fountain Mall and the Garden of Contentment are solid outdoor study picks. Fountain Mall has benches, chairs, and shade from mature trees. The Garden of Contentment, east of the library near Waco Hall, is a quieter green space with fountain views. Both are free and require nothing more than a charged laptop.
How to Pick the Right Spot
Not every study spot works for every task. Here's a quick cheat sheet:
- Deep focus / writing papers: Armstrong Browning Library, Moody 3rd floor, Jones Library
- Group projects: Common Grounds backyard, Moody Garden Level, the SUB
- Casual reading / light work: Fabled Bookshop, Milo patio, Fountain Mall
- Late-night cramming: Common Grounds (until 11pm), Dichotomy (until 11pm–midnight)
- Need food + coffee: Cha Community, Milo All Day, the SUB
Your Apartment Is a Study Spot Too
After a long day at the library or a packed cafe, coming home to a quiet, comfortable apartment makes a difference. At Centre, every unit has high-speed internet included, so you can study from your couch without fighting for cafe Wi-Fi. Add in a kitchen for late-night snacks and an in-unit washer/dryer so you can multitask during laundry, and your apartment becomes one of your best study spots.
