Baylor Spring Break Guide: What to Do, Where to Go, and How to Plan It

Tropical beach at sunset with turquoise water and soft waves on white sand

Every January, the same question starts bouncing around Baylor group chats: what are we doing for Baylor University spring break? Whether you're planning a road trip to the coast, staying in Waco to catch up on sleep, or trying to do something fun on a student budget, this guide covers all your options — with real costs, drive times, and ideas you can actually use.

When Is Baylor Spring Break 2026?

Baylor Spring Break 2026 runs from Saturday, March 7 through Sunday, March 15 — giving you a full nine days if you count the weekends on both ends. That's more time than most Texas schools get, so use it wisely.

Spring break dates shift slightly each year, so always confirm on the Baylor Academic Calendar. But it consistently falls in early-to-mid March, which means warm-ish weather for Texas road trips and beach time.

Option 1: The Classic Road Trip

Texas is massive, and that works in your favor. Some of the best spring break destinations are a tank of gas away. Here are the most popular road trips Baylor students take:

South Padre Island (~4.5 hours)

The go-to spring break destination for Texas college students. South Padre Island offers free beach access, warm Gulf Coast water, and a nightlife scene that ramps up hard in March. The busiest weeks in 2026 are expected to be March 10-17 and March 17-24, which lines up perfectly with Baylor's break.

Budget breakdown for South Padre:

  • Accommodation: $50-150/night when split with friends (4-6 people in a condo is the move)
  • Food: $30-50/day
  • Nightlife: $50-75/night
  • Gas: ~$60-80 round trip split among 4 passengers
  • Total for the week: Expect $800-1,200 per person all-in

The trick to keeping costs down: book your condo early (prices spike after February), bring a cooler full of groceries for breakfast and lunch, and save restaurant spending for dinner.

Austin (~2 hours)

The closest "big city" escape. Austin gives you live music on 6th Street, Barton Springs Pool, incredible Tex-Mex, and enough breweries to fill a week. At only two hours north on I-35, you can even do day trips from Waco if you don't want to commit to a full week.

Budget tip: Austin Airbnbs in East Austin run $80-120/night split among a group. Food trucks keep meals under $15.

San Antonio (~3 hours)

The River Walk, the Alamo, and some of the best tacos in Texas. San Antonio is more affordable than Austin and has a more relaxed pace — solid choice if you want culture and good food without the 6th Street chaos.

Dallas (~1.5 hours)

Not the typical spring break vibe, but if you've got friends there or want to hit Deep Ellum, the Dallas Arts District, or catch a Mavericks game, it's a cheap and easy trip. Some students just go home for a few days and use the rest of the week for something else.

Option 2: Stay in Waco (It's Better Than You Think)

Not everyone has the budget — or the desire — for a week-long road trip. And honestly, Waco in March is underrated. The weather hovers in the mid-70s, campus is empty, and you've got the whole city to yourself.

Outdoor Adventures

  • Cameron Park — 400+ acres of trails, Lover's Leap overlook, and the Brazos River. March is one of the best months for hiking before summer heat kicks in. Check out our Cameron Park trail guide for routes.
  • Brazos River kayaking — Pura Vida Paddle and Waco Paddle Company rent kayaks, paddleboards, and even offer SUP yoga on the river.
  • Lake Waco — Fishing, sunbathing, and disc golf. Pack a cooler and make a day of it.

Magnolia Silos Spring Festival

If you haven't done the Silos yet (or want to go when it's not packed with game day tourists), Spring at the Silos runs every Friday and Saturday from March 6 through April 25 in 2026. Expect craft workshops, live music, outdoor movie nights, and the Silos Baking Co. without the usual two-hour line.

Museums and Culture

  • Dr Pepper Museum — Three levels of exhibits plus a handmade Dr Pepper from the original soda fountain. It's more fun than it sounds.
  • Mayborn Museum — Natural history and science exhibits, plus rotating special collections.
  • Armstrong Browning Library — One of Baylor's hidden gems. Free admission, stunning architecture, and world-class stained glass.

Robinson Family Farm

The Tulip Festival at Robinson Family Farm runs through March — thousands of tulips you can pick yourself, plus a biergarten, axe throwing, and a playground. It's a 15-minute drive from campus and makes for great photos.

Budget Comparison: Road Trip vs. Staying in Waco

Here's a honest look at what each option costs:

South Padre (7 days) Austin (4 days) Stay in Waco
Accommodation $350-700 $200-400 $0 (your apartment)
Food $210-350 $120-200 $70-100
Transportation $60-80 $40-50 $20-30 (gas around town)
Activities/Nightlife $300-500 $150-250 $50-100
Total per person $920-1,630 $510-900 $140-230

The difference is stark. Staying in Waco during spring break saves you $500-1,400 compared to a South Padre trip. That's rent money, textbook money, or a much better summer vacation fund.

Tips for Coming Back Early

If you leave town for part of the break and come back early, a few things to know:

  • Campus dining is closed during spring break. Stock up on groceries before you leave or plan to eat out.
  • The SUB and library operate on reduced hours. Check Baylor's website for the spring break schedule.
  • Waco is quiet — and that's a feature, not a bug. Use the empty campus for runs, the gym for uninterrupted workouts, and your apartment for actual rest.
  • Traffic is nonexistent. If you've been meaning to explore Waco neighborhoods or try a restaurant that's usually packed, spring break is your window.

Your Apartment Is Your Spring Break Base

Whether you're road-tripping out or staying local, having your own apartment makes spring break simpler. No dorm RA schedules, no dining hall closures affecting your meals, and no packing up your life for a week.

At Centre, your amenities don't take a break either — in-unit washer/dryer means you can do laundry before and after your trip, included internet means you can stream all week, and included parking means your car is ready when you are. Browse our floor plans to see what's available for next year.

Make the Most of Your Break

Baylor University spring break is one of the few times the entire campus exhales. Whether you spend it on the beach in South Padre, exploring Austin's food trucks, or hiking Cameron Park in perfect March weather, the key is to actually disconnect. Close the textbooks, put the laptop away, and give yourself a real reset before the back half of the semester.
