Waco Public Swimming Pools and Splash Pads: A Student's Summer Guide
Waco summers are no joke. Average highs hit 97°F in August, and the city regularly logs 15+ days above 100°F between June and September. When a Cameron Park hike or a pickup soccer game stops being fun and starts feeling dangerous, you need somewhere to cool off — fast.
The good news: Waco has more public swimming options than most students realize, ranging from completely free city splash pads to Baylor's own aquatic center. This guide covers every legitimate option for a Baylor student trying to survive a Texas summer without melting.
The Only City of Waco Public Swimming Pool
Waco used to operate several public pools, but most have closed over the past two decades. Doris Miller Community Pool (1020 Elm Ave, Waco TX 76704) is currently the city's one remaining public pool, and it's worth knowing about.
Current pricing: $5 per person for daily admission. The Summer Splash Pass — $25 for unlimited access through August — is an obvious deal if you plan to go more than five times.
Hours: Monday and Wednesday 8am–Noon and 4–7pm; Tuesday and Thursday 2–6pm; Friday and Saturday 8am–3pm; closed Sunday. Those split-shift weekday hours on Monday/Wednesday are the most useful for students with afternoon classes.
The pool offers lap swimming and open swim, plus aquatic fitness classes and lifeguard certification programs if you're looking for a job. It's east Waco's primary aquatics facility and genuinely accessible — $5 per visit is cheaper than most gyms and infinitely more refreshing.
One honest note: Doris Miller is a community pool in a residential neighborhood, not a resort. It's clean, well-maintained, and functional. If you're expecting a leisure pool with water slides, this isn't it. But if you want actual swimming at a very low price, it delivers.
Six Free Splash Pads Across the City
If you want water recreation with zero admission cost, Waco's splash pad network is the answer. The city operates six free splash pads, all open 8am–10pm from May through September:
- Kendrick Park — 4011 Bagby Ave (closest to Baylor campus, about 1.5 miles north)
- Pecan Bottoms in Cameron Park — inside the park system near the Brazos River
- Dewey Park — 925 N 9th St
- Chapel Park — 9420 Chapel Rd (northwest Waco)
- Mountainview Park — 2325 Mountainview
- Oscar DuConge Park — 1707 JJ Flewellen
Splash pads aren't just for little kids. On a day when the heat index tips past 105°F, walking through a spray zone for 20 minutes is genuinely refreshing and a legitimately fun mid-afternoon break. The Kendrick Park location is the most convenient from South Waco and Centre, and the Cameron Park splash pad sits inside a park where you can also hike, picnic, and catch views of the Brazos River.
No admission, no parking fees, no planning required. These are exactly the kind of free amenities that make Waco a better college town than its size suggests.
Baylor's McLane Student Life Center: Free for Students
If you're enrolled at Baylor, your student ID gets you into the McLane Student Life Center (209 Speight Ave) — and that includes the aquatic facilities.
The SLC has a combination fitness and leisure pool plus a separate area for lap swimming. For most students, this is the highest-quality free swimming option in the city. The pool is indoors and climate-controlled, which matters when you want to swim without planning around outdoor heat or splash pad hours.
Check with Campus Recreation (campusrec.web.baylor.edu) for the current pool schedule, as lap swim and open swim times rotate throughout the week. The facility also offers swim lessons and aquatics programming if you want to actually improve your stroke.
Bottom line: if you're paying Baylor tuition, use this. It's the best aquatics deal on this list.
YMCA Greater Waco: Year-Round Indoor Pool
For students who want a year-round indoor pool that isn't tied to a Baylor student schedule, the YMCA Greater Waco at 6800 Harvey Drive is worth knowing about.
The Y has indoor swimming pools and therapy pools. Non-member day passes are available — contact the branch directly at (254) 776-6612 for current pricing, since rates and membership tiers change seasonally. If you swim regularly, a monthly YMCA membership often works out cheaper than paying day pass rates each visit.
The drive from South Waco or Baylor campus is about 15 minutes. Less convenient than the SLC for students, but a solid option during semesters when you want lap swimming access outside of university hours or during summer when the SLC schedule shifts.
Centre Apartments: Strategically Located for Waco's Water Recreation
Living at Centre Apartments (1901 S 11th Street) puts you in the middle of South Waco's best access corridors. The Kendrick Park splash pad is a short drive north, Doris Miller Community Pool is accessible via MLK Blvd, and the Cameron Park splash pads are easy to reach via I-35.
Our 2BR, 2BR Townhouse, and 3BR floor plans include in-unit washer/dryer — which means quick rinse-off towels and swim gear ready to go without a trip to a laundry room. View our floor plans to see current availability.
Waco Surf Resort: The Premium Option
For a completely different experience, Waco Surf Resort (2400 FM 3051, Woodway TX) operates a public "Town Pool" area separate from the wave park — typically $8–$15 entry. If you're going to make a day of it, you can add wave park access at an additional cost.
This is Waco's most impressive water experience but also its priciest. Think of the Town Pool as a step up from a public pool with resort amenities — lazy river, better infrastructure, food and drinks available on-site. Great for a group outing but not a budget daily swim spot.
We've got a full breakdown in our Waco Surf Park guide if you want the complete picture of what the resort offers.
Hawaiian Falls Waco: Water Park Alternative
Hawaiian Falls (on McGregor Drive, accessible from I-35) is Waco's dedicated water park — full water slides, wave pool, lazy river, and a more traditional summer theme park setup. Admission runs around $30–$40 for a full day, with season passes available.
This is an event rather than a routine swim spot. Perfect for a weekend outing with a group, a birthday celebration, or a visitor looking for the full water park experience. We have more details in our Hawaiian Falls guide.
Which Option Makes Sense for You?
The right choice depends on what you actually need:
Free or nearly free:
- Baylor student with SLC access → McLane Student Life Center, no cost
- Anyone in Waco May–September → 6 free splash pad locations
- Budget-conscious non-student → Doris Miller Community Pool ($5/visit or $25 summer pass)
Regular swimming habit:
- YMCA membership for year-round indoor lap access
- Doris Miller Summer Splash Pass if you're staying in Waco all summer
Group outing or special occasion:
- Waco Surf Resort Town Pool ($8–$15) or full wave park experience
- Hawaiian Falls for the classic water park day
Waco's summer heat is relentless, but you have real options for managing it without spending much money. The combination of free splash pads, a $5 public pool, and free SLC access for students makes keeping cool genuinely accessible — which is more than can be said for most Texas cities this size.
