Baylor Welcome Week Survival Guide: Your First Week at Baylor

Students moving into their first college apartment, carrying boxes and luggage on a sunny campus move-in day

Your first week at Baylor can feel like drinking from a fire hose. Move2BU volunteers are hauling boxes through August heat, the New2Baylor portal has a checklist that never seems to end, and someone is already inviting you to three different events before you've found your dorm room. But here's the thing: Baylor Welcome Week is one of the most deliberately designed orientation experiences in the Big 12, and students who arrive prepared leave it with a social foundation that carries them through four years.

This guide covers what actually happens during Welcome Week 2026, what to handle before you arrive, the social moves that matter most, and the logistical mistakes that catch new students off guard every fall.

What Is Baylor Welcome Week?

Baylor Welcome Week officially runs August 20–23, 2026, with move-in beginning as early as August 16 for on-campus residents. Classes start Monday, August 24. The week is organized by Baylor's Division of Student Life and combines formal programming, social events, and the practical orientation work of becoming an actual Baylor student.

Key events on the 2026 schedule:

  • Welcome Week Roundup — Aug 20, 7:30–9:30 PM (Fountain Mall): outdoor social mixer; your first real chance to meet people outside your immediate dorm floor
  • Academic Convocation — Aug 21, 10:30–11:30 AM (Ferrell Center): President Livingstone addresses the entire incoming class; this is the formal academic welcome to Baylor
  • Spirit Rally — Aug 21, 7 PM (Foster Pavilion): high-energy introduction to Baylor athletics culture; go to this one
  • The Big Event — Aug 22, 8–10:30 PM (Bill Daniel Student Center/Fountain Mall): one of the most attended social events of the week
  • Candlelight Worship — Aug 23, 8 PM (Fountain Mall): Baylor's signature closing tradition, meaningful regardless of your religious background

If you're an international student, Global Bears Week (Aug 17–20) runs separately before the main programming begins.

Move-In: The Logistics You Need to Know

Move-in is staggered by housing type to keep Fountain Mall from looking like a highway pileup:

Move-In Window Who It's For
Aug 16–18, 9 AM–5 PM Early move-in applicants
Aug 19, 8 AM–12 PM Living-Learning Communities and Residential Colleges
Aug 20, 8 AM–12 PM First-Year Communities
Aug 21–23, 8 AM–12 PM Upper-Division students

Move2BU coordinates volunteer crews to help first-year students carry boxes — take them up on it. The volunteers are organized and fast, and late August Waco humidity is not something you want to fight alone.

Practical tip: Have everything labeled and staged before volunteers arrive. Most crews move an entire carload in under 20 minutes when students are ready. If you're hauling furniture, a dolly is worth its weight. Unlike dorm move-in, off-campus apartments don't provide Move2BU crews — but you do get the advantage of moving in weeks earlier when things are calmer.

Your Pre-Arrival Checklist

Several of these have lead times that will catch you off guard if you wait until move-in week.

Submit your Baylor One Card photo early. Go to idcard.baylor.edu and upload your photo at least one week before arrival. The One Card is your meal swipe, library access, and building key all in one. Arrive without it and you're standing in line at the Card Office during the week it's most backed up.

Order your parking permit before August 16. Purchase through the My Parking Account portal at baylor.edu/parking. New freshman exemptions open August 16. Permits run out — especially for the closest lots. If you're an off-campus student, check the Baylor parking guide to understand what you're actually eligible for.

Activate your BearID and Baylor email. Your Bear ID credentials unlock BearWeb (registration, grades, billing), Canvas (all coursework), and AirBear Wi-Fi campus-wide. Set this up at home so your first day isn't spent troubleshooting login issues at the IT Help Desk.

Download the right apps before you arrive. Three you actually need: the GET app for mobile One Card access, the Baylor app for maps and course schedules, and Canvas for coursework. Add your class buildings to the campus map now — not on the morning of day one.

Open a local bank account. If you're paying rent or utilities in Waco, you want direct deposit working from day one. Chase, Wells Fargo, and Extraco Banks all have branches within a few miles of campus. Our Waco banking guide covers which accounts work best for Baylor students with no monthly fees.

Register with Baylor Health Services. Complete your health forms, submit vaccination records, and identify any prescriptions at healthservices.web.baylor.edu before you arrive. This takes 20 minutes at home and an hour in the first week when the clinic is packed.

Check your first apartment checklist. If you're moving into an off-campus place, the logistics are different from dorms — there's no RA to call and no facilities crew to request a replacement lamp.

The Social Reality: How Baylor Friendships Actually Form

Here's what no official orientation brochure will tell you: the friendships that carry through four years at Baylor mostly form in the first two weeks. After that, people settle into routines and social circles become harder to enter.

Welcome Week is explicitly designed to lower those barriers before they form. Take advantage of the openness while it lasts.

  • Show up to the Welcome Week Roundup even if you don't know anyone. This event exists specifically for strangers to meet strangers. Standing awkwardly in your dorm room instead is the most common rookie mistake, and students who skip it often regret it mid-October.
  • Talk to people in your dorm before classes start. The dining hall line, the elevator, the common room — these are your social infrastructure for the first month. Be the person who starts conversations.
  • Attend the resource and organization fair. Hundreds of student orgs set up in one place during Welcome Week. You don't have to join anything — but you'll get a map of what's available for the rest of the semester. Getting involved in clubs is one of the strongest predictors of Baylor student satisfaction. See the full landscape in our guide to Baylor clubs and organizations.
  • Go to the Spirit Rally. Baylor's athletics culture runs deep, and the Spirit Rally is your entry point. Whether you're a football obsessive or have never watched a Big 12 game, you'll come away understanding what game day means at Baylor.

For Off-Campus Students: Start Earlier

If you're moving into an off-campus apartment for your sophomore year — or if you're an upperclassman returning to Waco — your Welcome Week timeline looks different.

Most Waco leases start August 1, giving you three-plus weeks before classes begin. That's an advantage: you can have furniture arranged, utilities running, and groceries stocked before the move-in rush hits campus. You won't be waiting for an elevator with 40 other students who all moved in the same day.

Centre Apartments at 1901 S 11th Street is a 10-minute walk from Baylor's main quad — close enough to reach the Ferrell Center for Academic Convocation or Foster Pavilion for the Spirit Rally without moving your car. During Welcome Week, when campus parking is even more crowded than usual, walking distance to campus is a meaningful daily advantage.

If you're a freshman going through Welcome Week right now and thinking about where you want to live next year, that's the right time to start the search. Off-campus housing near Baylor fills months before the following fall. Our dorm to apartment guide covers exactly when and how to make that transition.

Common First-Week Mistakes

These show up every year without fail:

  • Waiting until after move-in to apply for a parking permit. The best spots are gone by then.
  • Skipping the Baylor One Card photo submission. You'll wait in line during the week you least have time to wait in line.
  • Assuming you'll figure out your class buildings on the first day. Walk your schedule route before classes start — Baylor's campus is larger than it looks on a map.
  • Not eating in the dining halls once. Even if you're off-campus, try a meal in the dining hall during Welcome Week. It's a social event as much as a meal, and you'll meet people you wouldn't otherwise encounter.
  • Skipping the resource fair because "I can find stuff online." The organizations at the fair want to talk to you, and the in-person conversation is more useful than a website. Go for 30 minutes.

Make Your First Week Count

Baylor Welcome Week isn't a formality — it's the most socially open week of your college career. Show up to the events, handle the logistics before they become problems, and say yes to more conversations than feels comfortable. The infrastructure exists to help you settle in; the only mistake is not using it.

If you're planning where to live after freshman year, schedule a tour of Centre Apartments and see what living walking distance from all of it actually looks like. Or browse floor plan options with the roommates you meet this week — the 2BR and 3BR layouts are built for the groups that form during exactly these first few days.
