Baylor Intramural Sports and Campus Recreation: A Student's Complete Guide

Whether you're a competitive athlete who wants to keep playing after high school or just looking for a fun way to meet people and stay active, Baylor intramurals are one of the most underrated programs on campus. With over a dozen sports offered each semester, zero prior experience required, and a $25 PlayPass that covers the entire semester, Baylor campus recreation makes it easy for any student — including those living off-campus — to jump in, find a team, and compete. Here's everything you need to start.

What Sports Are Available at Baylor Intramurals?

Baylor's intramural program spans both the fall and spring semesters with a full range of options. The current lineup includes:

Fall semester sports: Flag football, soccer, volleyball, cornhole, spikeball, pickleball, tennis, and ultimate frisbee.

Spring semester sports: 5v5 basketball, softball, dodgeball, table tennis, canoe race, and more.

Most major sports — including basketball, flag football, soccer, and volleyball — are offered in two divisions:

  • Competitive: Organized brackets, playoffs, and championship rounds for students who want a real competitive experience.
  • Recreational: Casual, lower-stakes play that's perfect for socializing and staying active without the pressure.

If you're unsure where you fit, start in the recreational division. You can always move up. Most first-time intramural participants who start in rec find that it's exactly the right intensity — genuinely fun without turning into a second job.

How to Register for Baylor Intramurals

All baylor intramural registration runs through MyRec.baylor.edu or the Fusion Play app (iOS and Android). The process is straightforward once you have your Baylor credentials:

  1. Log in at MyRec.baylor.edu with your Baylor email and Bearid.
  2. Browse available sports and select your preferred division (Competitive or Recreational).
  3. Register as a full team — or as a free agent if you don't have enough players to fill a roster.
  4. Pay your PlayPass fee and confirm.

The free-agent option is genuinely useful. If you're new to campus or don't know eight people who want to play flag football, the system places you with other free agents in the same sport and division. It's one of the better ways to meet people early in the semester.

Critical timing note: Sign up the day registration opens for your sport. Flag football and 5v5 basketball fill within the first few days — sometimes within hours for competitive brackets. Follow @BaylorIMSports on Instagram for notifications when registration windows open for each sport, or enable push notifications in the Fusion Play app.

The Baylor Intramural Sports Pass: What It Costs

To participate in any baylor intramural sport, you need a PlayPass, which costs $25 per semester. That's a flat fee — one PlayPass covers every intramural sport you play during that semester. Sign up for flag football in August, then join a volleyball team in October, and the single pass covers both.

For context, that's less than a single dinner out. The PlayPass is arguably the best-value item in the Baylor student activity catalog — organized, competitive sports for an entire semester at less than the cost of a single game ticket.

All enrolled Baylor students are eligible. Faculty and staff in good standing can also participate. You do not need to be a freshman or live on campus — off-campus students have the same full access to baylor campus recreation as dorm residents.

McLane Student Life Center: Your Campus Rec Hub

Every intramural sport is coordinated through the McLane Student Life Center (SLC), a 156,000-square-foot facility at 209 Speight Ave, Waco, TX 76706. The SLC is Baylor campus rec's flagship — not just a gym, but the center of student athletic life.

Facilities inside the SLC include:

  • Full fitness center with cardio machines, free weights, and cable equipment
  • 4-court gymnasium (used for basketball, volleyball, and indoor intramural events)
  • Outdoor basketball courts and sand volleyball courts
  • Competitive lap pool and leisure pool
  • Rock climbing wall
  • Indoor jogging track (above the gymnasium)
  • Racquetball and squash courts
  • Group fitness and aerobics studio

SLC hours (verify current schedule at slc.web.baylor.edu):

  • Monday–Thursday: 6:00 AM – 12:00 AM
  • Friday: 6:00 AM – 10:00 PM
  • Saturday: 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM
  • Sunday: 12:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Which Baylor Intramural Sport Should You Play?

Here's a quick guide based on what you're looking for:

Best for meeting people fast: Cornhole or spikeball — small teams, short games, lots of downtime between rounds to talk.

Best for high-energy competition: Flag football or 5v5 basketball — the most popular sports on campus, and the competitive divisions are genuinely serious.

Best if you've never played intramurals before: Recreational volleyball or ultimate frisbee — low barrier to entry, easy to learn on the fly, and forgiving for beginners.

Best for the most unique experience: The canoe race — offered in spring, it's a Baylor tradition that has nothing to do with athletic ability and everything to do with coordination and laughing at yourself.

Best for flexible schedules: Table tennis and pickleball, which tend to have shorter matches and more scheduling flexibility than team sports.

Living Off-Campus and Staying Active

Off-campus students have the same full access to baylor campus recreation as anyone living in a dorm. All you need is a valid Baylor ID and your PlayPass — where you sleep doesn't factor in.

For students at Centre Apartments at 1901 S 11th Street, the McLane Student Life Center is approximately a 10-minute walk through the Baylor campus. That's close enough that you won't think twice about heading over after class or for an evening intramural game. Centre's included high-speed internet, in-unit washer/dryer, and gated community make it easy to come home after practice without the friction of a far commute — you're close to campus life without being locked into dorm rules.

If you haven't toured yet, schedule a visit to see the walking route yourself. Our 2BR and 3BR floor plans are designed for students who want the space and independence of apartment living while staying close to everything Baylor offers — including the gym and intramurals. Get in the Game

Baylor intramurals are one of the highest-value parts of student life that most students don't take full advantage of until sophomore or junior year. At $25 per semester, the PlayPass pays for itself after a single flag football game. The free-agent system makes it accessible even without a full squad, and the rec division is genuinely welcoming for students who just want to move and have fun.

Register at MyRec.baylor.edu or download the Fusion Play app to see what's open this semester. If you're looking for a home base that keeps you close to the SLC, contact us or explore Centre's floor plans — walkability to campus is one of the things residents mention most when they describe why they chose Centre.
